Getting free calls on card phones

This is a small text to show you a simple social engineering trick to get free phone calls on a public card phone. NOTE: This will not work on coin phones.

The first step is to find out the phone number of the company that is in charge of that card phone. If you don't already know, look on the phone and somewhere it will have the logo of the phone company. If there is no phone number next to it, look up the company in a phone book. Or if you have an old phone card made by the company then on the card somewhere there should be the phone number.

The next step is to ring them from the card phone. You will be able to do this without using a card because it will be a toll free number. Once you have dialed the number wait for someone to answer, if it is an electronic voice, listen to the menu and find out how to speak to customer services, or it may go straight through to a person. Now when someone answers you, say hello obviously, then say you just brought a new phone card from a shop and you put it in the phone and it said it had no money. Then say you really need to call your mum/dad or whatever because of a change in plans or something. Then ask if you could be re-directed to the number you need to dial, hopefully they say yes. If they don't then make up some stuff and try and get them to do it, like say the shop's owner is on a lunch break or something.

Once you have got them to say yes, then they will ask you for the number. Now obviously you gotta give them the number, give them the number you want to call and you will be re-directed. Congratulations, you just got a free call from social engineering.

If you are kind of stuck, here is a little conversation i had to get a free call:

* I call the phone company *
Company: Good afternoon how may i help you?
Me: Ah, hi, i just brought a new phone card before and i put it in the slot and it said there was nothing on it and i really need to call     my mum.
Company: Ok, you need to go back to the shop you brought it from and   ask for a form and fill it out and send it to us.
Me: I went back and the owner has gone on his lunch brake. Um, is it   possible to be re-directed to the number i need to call?
Company: Sure, what is the number please?
* I say the number clearly *
Company: Just a moment please.
* I am put through! *
